Scientifically known as Orbea variegata, the toad spotted cactus is a leafless perennial succulent that reaches heights of 10 cm and widths of 50 cm. It has toothed stems that resemble cacti, and its highly variable, star-shaped, off-white or yellow flowers strongly flecked with maroon can reach diameters of up to 8 cm. The flowers may have irregular or symmetrical markings. They have a central pentagonal annulus surrounded by five lobes that can be pointed or blunt corona.

Toad spotted cactus is formerly known as Stapelia variegata. It also goes by a number of common names, including the toad plant, toad cactus, carrion flower, and starfish plant.

The toad spotted cactus is not closely related to the true cactus family. Since it cannot withstand freezing temperatures, it needs protection when grown as an ornamental plant in temperate climates.
